Oregon Coaching Job - Who's in the Running For the Oregon Coaching Job?

the life coaching

There are many candidates for coaching jobs in Oregon. Some coaches can be hired as short-term employees, while others will stay on for the long-term. Mullens wants a long-term coach. Taggart was a onetime deal and Cristobal was lured away from Oregon by a suitor.

Willie Taggart

Oregon was one of many programs that considered Taggart for this offseason. Taggart was offered $20 Million over five-years to coach the Ducks. Taggart declined the offer. Instead, Florida State offered Taggart the coaching job. Taggart, however, felt strongly about the prospect of rebuilding the UO program. He also rejected the $30 Million offer by Florida State.

Taggart was passed over by the NFL to become a coach. He spent time at Stanford under Jim Harbaugh and at Oregon before he began his coaching career. Taggart's philosophy is focused on excellence and discipline with accountability as the first priority. He said he urged his players to "chase greatness."

Willie Aranda

Aranda, who was named head coach of the Baylor Bears in 2020, has a proven track record. After winning the 2019 national title at LSU, he relocated to Baylor where he led the Bears' 11-1 record and won the Big 12 title. Cal Lutheran is where he was raised.

Oregon is currently looking for a head coach to replace Mario Cristobal, who left Oregon to go to Miami. We looked at some of these coaching candidates in a Duck Territory podcast. We evaluated each candidate and discussed the pros/cons to hiring someone with coaching experience from the Pac-12.

Justin Wilcox

The University of Oregon is vastly different from the time Wilcox was hired as a professor in the late 1990s. High expectations are placed on the staff and the facilities. Mario Cristobal (the last coach at the school), won 10 games this year, including a win in Ohio State. However, he faced harsh criticism for not winning more games. Mark Helfrich was also a native Oregonian and his former coach. Both were fired at the end of the season.

The Ducks are interviewing potential candidates to be their head coach. In addition to Wilcox, Oregon athletic director Bob Canzano has also been in contact with two other candidates, one of whom is in the NFL. The Ducks are keen to hire a coach as soon as possible. Early signing day is just around the corner. Each minute that passes increases the chance that a candidate will be drawn to a different program.

Mario Cristobal

Mario Cristobal is now the University of Miami's football head coach. He has also coached at Florida International University (FIU) and Oregon State University. He was an offensive tackle in college football, playing for the Miami Hurricanes. He was also awarded First-Team All-Big East Conference honors for 1991 and 1992. He graduated in 1993 from the University of Miami and earned his master’s degree in 2001.

Cristobal will be taking over a program in dire need of help. The Hurricanes are currently 7-5 and their head coach Greg Diaz has won just 21 games in his three seasons here. After Miami's firing of Blake James, Diaz had his job security questioned. Miami is set to face Washington State in this month's Sun Bowl.
